One GM Family, Many Familiar Names
General Motors has built vehicles under many familiar American nameplates. Today, Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac and Buick remain the core U.S. GM brands, while names such as Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Saturn and Geo belong to earlier chapters of GM history. The original Hummer brand also disappeared from the market before the Hummer name later returned under GMC.
For a locksmith, these brands are connected by more than corporate history. Across different years and vehicle platforms, GM brands have often shared related key blanks, security technologies, remotes, transponder systems and programming procedures. That does not mean every Chevrolet key will work in a GMC or every Cadillac fob is interchangeable with a Buick. The exact key still depends on the vehicle, year, security system, electronics and programming requirements. But when you work with GM vehicles every day, you see the family resemblance very clearly.
Before Electronics: The Simple Metal Key
Older GM vehicles used the kind of key most people still picture when they think of a traditional car key: a piece of metal cut to match the locks and ignition. There was no hidden microchip that had to be recognized by the vehicle. If the key was cut correctly and the mechanical components were in good condition, it did its job.
Many older Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, Pontiac and Oldsmobile vehicles came from this era. Some older GM vehicles also used separate keys for different functions, such as the ignition and the doors or trunk. For locksmiths, the job was primarily mechanical: identify the correct blank, decode or duplicate the cuts, and make a key that operated the lock correctly.

VATS: GM Adds Electronic Security to the Key
GM later introduced VATS, commonly associated with the distinctive key that has a small visible resistor pellet in the blade. Unlike today’s hidden transponder chips, the VATS element was easy to see. Owners of older GM vehicles may remember that little insert, and with age it could become worn or damaged.
VATS was an important step in GM’s move from purely mechanical keys toward electronically authenticated vehicle security. It is technically different from a modern transponder system, so it deserves its own discussion. We will keep the VATS story short here because there is enough history and troubleshooting knowledge behind those keys for a separate Cobra Locksmith article.
The Big Change Was Hidden Inside the Plastic
The next major change was much less obvious to the driver. As GM moved into transponder-based immobilizer systems, a tiny electronic transponder could be built into the plastic head of what still looked like a very ordinary car key.
That hidden chip changed the key-making process completely. A customer might look at a black plastic-head key and assume it is just a cheap piece of plastic attached to a metal blade. In reality, the plastic can contain the electronic credential the vehicle needs before it will authorize the engine to start.
By the late 1990s and into the early 2000s, transponder-based security was becoming common across many vehicles, including a growing number of GM applications. The exact introduction varies by model and system, so the year alone is never enough to identify a key. A Chip Key Has Two Jobs
With an older mechanical key, duplicating the cuts may be enough. With a transponder key, cutting is only one part of the job.
First, the blade must be cut correctly so it can mechanically operate the ignition and, where applicable, the door lock. Second, the correct electronic transponder must be present and recognized by the vehicle’s anti-theft system. A key can be cut perfectly, turn in the ignition and still fail to start the vehicle if the electronic side is wrong.
GM has used multiple transponder and immobilizer technologies over the years. Depending on the vehicle and generation, locksmiths may encounter different chip families, including systems commonly associated with ID46-type transponders as well as other GM security technologies. To the customer, many of these keys look almost identical. To the vehicle, they can be completely different.
Why Many Owners Do Not Know They Have a Chip Key
This is still something we see at our Cedar Park key shop. A customer brings in an older Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, Cadillac, Pontiac, Saturn or other GM key and asks for a simple copy. The key has no buttons, no visible battery and nothing that obviously looks electronic, so it is easy to assume that only the metal blade matters.
The transponder may be completely hidden inside the molded plastic head. That is why making a spare can involve more than putting the key into a cutting machine. The correct key technology has to be identified, and programming or another appropriate transponder procedure may be required before the new key will start the vehicle.

Old Transponder Keys Are Surprisingly Durable
Traditional plastic-head transponder keys are simple but remarkably durable. The transponder is protected inside the key head, and there is usually no exposed button pad, replaceable remote battery or large circuit board like the electronics found in a modern smart fob.
Because of that construction, these keys generally tolerate everyday abuse and normal moisture exposure very well. They get dropped, scratched and carried for years, yet the hidden transponder can continue doing its job. We would not describe every transponder key as completely waterproof, but in practice a basic sealed chip key is usually far less vulnerable to water than a modern electronic smart key fob.
Modern proximity fobs contain considerably more electronics. If one is submerged or heavily exposed to water, moisture can reach the circuit board and cause corrosion, intermittent operation or complete failure. Sometimes a wet smart key works at first and begins acting up later as corrosion develops.
From Remote-Head Keys to Proximity Smart Fobs
As GM vehicles became more advanced, the key and remote increasingly became one electronic package. Remote-head keys combined the mechanical blade, transponder and lock/unlock buttons. Later, proximity systems changed the driver’s experience again.
Many newer Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac and Buick vehicles no longer require the driver to insert a key into an ignition cylinder. The vehicle detects an authorized smart key nearby, and the driver starts the engine with a START/STOP button. The fob may also control locking, remote start, liftgate functions and other features depending on the vehicle.
Even when two GM smart fobs look almost identical, they should never be selected by appearance alone. Electronics, FCC identification, frequency, button layout, vehicle platform and programming requirements can differ. This is one reason an inexpensive fob purchased online can become expensive if it turns out to be the wrong key.
Discontinued Brand Does Not Mean the Keys Disappeared
Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Saturn and Geo are no longer building new vehicles, but many of their cars are still on the road. The same is true for older Hummer models. Owners still lose keys, need spare keys, break remotes and encounter ignition or security-system problems.
The dealership sign may have disappeared years ago, but the cars did not.
