Why Does My Car Say “Key Not Detected” When the Fob Is Right Here?

You get into your car, press the start button, and the dashboard says “Key Not Detected”. The fob is in your pocket or right beside you. What happened?

At Cobra Locksmith Key Shop in Cedar Park, we see this often with newer push-button-start vehicles. Many times, the fix is simple: the small battery inside the key fob needs to be replaced. If the warning remains, the fob or vehicle may need a closer look.

The Warning Often Starts With Shorter Range

One of the first signs of a weak fob battery is that the remote stops working from as far away as it used to. You may need to walk closer to the car or press the unlock button more than once.

Later, the doors may not respond at all. Eventually, even with the fob inside the vehicle, the car may fail to detect it when you press the start button.

Try a spare fob if you have one. If it works normally, start by checking the first fob’s battery.

Why Bring the Fob to an Automotive Locksmith?

What If a New Battery Dies Quickly?

If a fresh battery works for only a short time, the fob itself may be draining it. We see this after a key has been wet, dropped or otherwise damaged. Moisture can corrode the electronics, even if the fob initially works.

A Weak Fob Can Also Leave You Locked Out

The same weak battery that causes a starting warning can stop the door buttons or touch-to-unlock feature from working. Automatic door locking also varies by vehicle and settings. If the car does not recognize your fob, you could end up outside a locked vehicle with a key that no longer responds.

Many smart fobs hide a mechanical emergency key for unlocking the door. Some push-button-start vehicles also have a backup starting method for a weak fob. Check your vehicle’s manual for the correct steps; the door lock and backup detection point differ by model. Replacing the battery when the remote’s range first drops is easier than discovering the problem away from home.

If both fobs fail the same way, the problem may be with the vehicle rather than either key. Tell us whether the warning appears every time or only in certain places.

What About a Regular Ignition Key?

Although this warning is most familiar on push-button-start cars, a turn-key vehicle can also show a key or security warning and refuse to start. Many traditional ignition keys contain a small transponder chip in the plastic head. The vehicle’s immobilizer must recognize that chip before the engine will start.

The transponder chip in a typical turn-key ignition key does not run on the battery used by the lock and unlock buttons. A dead remote battery can stop the buttons while the key still starts the car. If the car does not recognize the chip, changing that remote battery usually will not fix it. The key, ignition-area reader or vehicle security system may need diagnosis. Trying a spare key can provide a useful clue.
